U20 European Women : France & Spain remain unbeaten

The second round of the competititon got underway in Spain yesterday, with twelve teams still in the hunt for quarter-final places and France and Spain again looking dominant. Latvia provided an upset, beating Russia in a close game. Results were as follows.

 

Group E

 

  • Latvia 49 - 46 Russia

 

MVP: Paula Strautmane (Lat) 18 pts, 6 rebounds

Key Stat: Russia only managed to score 3 pts in the last quarter, losing it 17-3.

 

  • Germany 35 - 65 France

 

MVP: Aby Gaye (Fra) 16 pts, 9 rebounds

Key Stat: France were dominant all-round and outrebounded Germany 49-33, a total that included 19 offensive boards.

 

  • Slovakia 51 - 46 Poland

 

MVP: Nikola Dudásová (Slo) 19 pts, 5 rebounds, 4 assists.

Key Stat: Not much in this one but in spite of only converting 6/13 free-throws, Slovakia outshot Poland 36.4% to 30.9% from the field.

 

Group F

 

  • Belgium 46 - 67 Spain

 

MVP: Leticia Romero (Spa) 13 pts, 13 rebounds, 7 assists, 2 steals

Key Stat: Belgium committed 27 turnovers, from which Spain managed to score 28 pts.

 

  • Holland 68 - 62 Italy

 

MVP: Isabelle Slim (Hol) 15 pts, 11 rebounds

Key Stat: The Dutch went 9/17 from 3-point range and outscored Italy 16-3 at the end of the match.

 

  • Hungary 46 - 41 Portugal

 

MVP: Maria Kostourkova (Por) 17 pts, 8 rebounds

Key Stat: Neither team shot the ball well (32% for Hungary, 24.6% for Portugal) but Hungary converted Portugal's 20 turnovers into 17 crucial points.

 

Group G (Classification matches)

 

  • Turkey 75 - 68 Czech Republic

 

MVP: Hülya Coklar (Tur) 20 pts, 8 rebounds, 3 steals

Key Stat: The Czechs committed 24 fouls and Turkey converted 19 of their 27 free-throws.

 

  • Serbia 81 - 71 Ukraine

 

MVP: Dragana Stankovic (Serbia) 18 pts, 10 rebounds

Key Stat: Both teams managed to shoot the ball accurately from 2-pt range. Serbia shared the ball better and created better opportunities with 21 assists to Ukraine's 14.
