U19W World Championships : Day 2 Review

U19W World Championships : Day 2 Review

Day 2 in Russia saw some of the favourites having to dig deep to record wins and France holding on against Canada after falling to debutantes Belgium on Day 1.

In spite of some spirited performances by the underdogs, the major nations raised their game when needed and managed to avoid any big upsets, with their big players stepping up to record some impressive stats. FIBA Europe Young Female Player of the Year Angela Salvadores (25 pts) combined well with Laura Quevedo to snuff out Egypt's hopes with a huge 4th quarter for Spain, point guard Louise Dambach pocketed 17 pts as France took a nail-biter against Canada and Emese Hof, fresh from making the tournament team at the U20 European Championships last week put in a monster performance, scoring 24 pts and taking down 16 boards as the Netherlands fought off Chinese Taipei in another close game. The third and final round of Group matches will take place on Tuesday, with all teams proceeding to the knockout phase and seeded according to their placing. Here are Sunday's results.
